Much of the recent press coverage involving lawyers has focused on the negative aspects of the profession. It seems that every time I open the newspaper, I come across another article discussing massive attorney lay-offs or law firm closures. As a counter to this onslaught of negative publicity, I thought that I would focus this Partner’s Letter on a more positive topic, namely Hanify & King’s commitment to pro bono and public service programs. Although current economic realities have made it increasingly difficult, Hanify & King has attempted to maintain a meaningful commitment to these programs. For example, Dan Dwyer, an associate from our office, was one of ten lawyers selected to participate in the Boston Bar Association’s Public Interest Leadership Program. The purpose of this program is to honor and encourage a select group of talented and highly motivated lawyers to participate in a new public interest program developed by the Boston Bar Association. Each participant in the program is expected to serve the program for a twelve-month period and their service will involve approximately twenty-five hours per month. It is our hope that Dan’s participation in this program will serve as an example to lawyers in our firm as well as the legal community at large. In addition, the firm recently co-sponsored (with NStar), a golf tournament designed to raise money for the Inner-City Scholarship Fund. The tournament and the silent auction that followed raised over $20,000 in scholarship money for inner city children. In this economic climate, we feel that it is more important than ever for attorneys to contribute significant portions of their professional life to important public interest causes.
