Recently, I caught up with a college roommate, Tom, now a CPA at a Big Five public accounting firm, on AOL instant messenger.
DE: Hey Tom.
Tom: What’s up? Still practicing law at Hanify & King?
DE: Yes, they’ve yet to expel me from the firm. We’ve just moved our offices to One Beacon Street.
Tom: Remind me, what is the firm’s area of expertise?
DE: We’re what’s referred to as a “boutique” firm…
Tom: I’d like a cashmere sweater please.
DE: Funny. We specialize in business problem solving—a species of crisis management—plus business litigation, bankruptcy, real estate, corporate and employment law. We’re not a general practice firm.
Tom: So you won’t update my estate plan?
DE: You still have assets? Boy, you have changed.
Tom: How’s business?
DE: Believe it or not, our last fiscal year was the best ever…bad times breed disputes; there’s not enough money to plaster over problems.
Tom: Where’s the practice headed?
DE: We’re going to stick to our knitting…
Tom: How about that sweater then?
DE: Ha, ha. Anyway, we’re going to help our clients get back to business, advocate where appropriate for the use of alternative dispute resolution (ADR), negotiate and document transactions, and reorganize financially challenged businesses.
Tom: Did you hear the one about the lawyer who. . .
DE: Forget it, I just change those jokes to accountants.
Tom: Maybe I should hire your guys.
DE: For you, we’d need a large retainer.
Tom: Later dude.
Technology has brought us all closer together. Sometimes not for the better. We hope to see you soon at our new offices.
