Experience
Mr. Schwartz has practiced exclusively in the field of intellectual property for 14 years. While his practice focuses on patent prosecution, Mr. Schwartz also has significant experience in the areas of patent litigation, patent licensing, due diligence associated with IP transfers, and infringement and validity opinions. Mr. Schwartz has written patent applications for electrical and software firms, including IBM, AT&T, Lucent, Fujitsu Network Communications, Oracle, Network Associates/McAfee and Xerox. His patent practice focuses on database software, telecommunications and network hardware and software, including optical network hardware and software, hard disk drive hardware, coding, and software, and computer malware detection software.
Mr. Schwartz has worked on important litigations, including one between Digital Equipment Corp. and Intel that resulted in a settlement that gave Intel the alpha chip and a substantial cash payment to Digital. He provided opinions of validity/invalidity of the Intel patents that were cross-claimed against Digital, as well as the infringement opinions provided to Digital of the Intel products. Partly as a result of the litigation, Digital merged into Compaq. Mr. Schwartz also has worked on cases involving encryption technology, computer security and high-speed communications.
Prior to joining Hanify & King, Mr. Schwartz worked for Bingham McCutchen LLP and was an engineer at Apple Computer. He is skilled in a variety of programming languages including C++, Java (including Java Beans), Java Server Pages, Java Transaction Service, Java Messaging Service and Extensible Markup Language (XML).
