Hanify & King is pleased to announce that eight of the firm’s attorneys have been named “Massachusetts Super Lawyers” for 2006 by Boston Magazine in the special supplement in the November 2006 issue. In addition, Attorney Harold B. Murphy was named in the Top Ten and John D. Hanify in the Top 100 among the 1,900 Massachusetts lawyers honored. Each lawyer included is selected by his or her peers throughout the state of Massachusetts as being outstanding in the profession. The selection process is extensive and includes polling lawyers across the state, conducting independent research, screening nominees, interviewing law firms, fact checking and a blue – ribbon panel review. The other six named Super Lawyers are: James C. King, Timothy P. O’Neill, David L. Evans, Charles R. Bennett, Jr., Andrew G. Lizotte, and Robert E. Richards.
Hanify, co-founder of Hanify & King, directs the firm’s litigation practice. For 25 years, he has tried cases and represented business clients in both state and federal courts, before federal and state agencies and in arbitration. Before forming Hanify & King, he served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts. Hanify is a trustee as well as a former treasurer of the Boston Bar Association and is a Fellow of the American, Boston and Massachusetts Bar Foundations. Hanify is named in Best Lawyers in America for his litigation experience.
King is President of Hanify & King and co-founded the firm in 1980.He began his practice in 1973 as an Attorney in the Office of Chief Counsel at the IRS. From 1974 to 1978, he served as a Trial Attorney in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice and as Administrative Assistant to the National Commission for the Review of Antitrust Laws and Procedures. In 1979, he was Special Assistant to the U.S. Attorneys for the Districts of Colorado and Massachusetts and was honored by the Department with its Outstanding Achievement Award
Murphy, is co-founder and director of the firm’s Bankruptcy and Financial Restructuring Group. Murphy specializes in bankruptcy and commercial law, including the representation of debtors, creditors’ committees, trustees and creditors in Chapter 11 reorganizations and Chapter 7 liquidations. Murphy also is named in Best Lawyers in America for his expertise in bankruptcy and insolvency as well as recognized as one of the top bankruptcy attorneys in the country by Chambers USA.
O’Neill heads the firm’s tort and professional liability group and has tried cases in federal and state courts throughout New England for over 30 years. He has served as a mediator and as a court-appointed master in civil cases. Mr. O’Neill served as Chairman of the Finance Commission of the City of Boston from 1986-1988, a fiscal watchdog agency with subpoena power. In that capacity, he led major investigations into management practices in the Boston School Department and the Boston Police Department.
Evans is a partner in the trial department and directs the firm’s ADR group. For more than 20 years, he has represented large public corporations, closely-held companies and individuals in the resolution of complex business disputes. He has litigated precedent-setting cases in areas such as leveraged buyouts, computer law, unfair trade practices, and patent licensing. Evans also maintains an active practice as a certified neutral arbitrator and mediator, serving in more than 100 cases over the last decade. He is a member of a number of arbitration panels, including the Commercial and Large, Complex Case Panels of the American Arbitration Association.
Bennett handles complex commercial litigation involving financial institutions, contracts, corporate issues, including directors’ and officers’ claims, and insolvency. The current focus of his practice is on rights and remedies for debtors and creditors in corporate Chapter 11 cases. He devotes a substantial amount of time to banking and lending litigation, representing both borrowers and banking institutions in commercial disputes. Bennett has tried numerous jury and jury-waived cases concerning business torts, unfair trade practices, and insolvency issues. Mr. Bennett is recognized as one of the top bankruptcy attorneys in the country by Chambers USA - America's Leading Lawyers For Business.
Lizotte has extensive experience representing different factions in bankruptcy proceedings, including operating Chapter 11 businesses, committees of unsecured creditors, lenders, both liquidating and operating trustees, examiners, and individuals. Lizotte also has experience in representing debtors in pre-bankruptcy workout negotiations and in representing estate representatives in assignments for the benefit of creditors and other non-bankruptcy alternatives. Lizotte is also a Certified Public Accountant and, prior to joining Hanify & King, was employed by KPMG Peat Marwick.
Richards directs the firm’s Business and Real Estate Group. His practice focuses on the legal needs of business enterprises, including those arising from the formation of business corporations and limited liability companies; the daily operation of a business; contractual solutions to business relationships; private company mergers, acquisitions and strategic transactions; commercial lending and mortgage banking transactions on behalf of banks and businesses; and transactions involving the acquisition, development, leasing, and financing of commercial real estate.
